Kor 1011/4001 Beginning Korean
Course Objectives: This course is the first of a two-semester sequence of Beginning Korean; it is designed for true beginners or non-heritage learners who have no or little background knowledge of Korean. It aims to begin developing the four communication skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) in Korean. It covers the basic grammatical structures and vocabulary necessary for basic conversation, reading comprehension, and writing to have the students build a solid foundation for further study in the Korean language. The course also provides useful information concerning culture (where culture touches on language and communication) and everyday life in Korea. After completing this course, a student should be able 1) to maintain simple face-to-face conversation by asking and answering simple questions in Korean, 2) to comprehend the learned materials, 3) to write simple sentences and expressions, and 4) to comprehend simple texts with limited vocabulary.
Objectives:
Upon completing this unit, students should:
Be able to participate in simple social conversations in Korean.
Possess basic 'survival' Korean for traveling in Korea.
Possess a solid grasp of numbers and counting.
Be able to talk about present, future and past events.
Be able to communicate basic information about themselves and family members.
Be able to read and write simple Korean with limited vocabulary.
Have a basic understanding of Korean culture/society (naming, greeting,
social hierarchy, collectivism etc)
Kor 1012/4002 Beginning Korean
This course is the second half of a two-semester sequence of Beginning Korean. This course is designed to assist students to develop mid-beginning level skills in the Korean language. These skills are speaking, listening, reading, and writing, as well as cultural understanding. Kor 1012 is designed for students who have already mastered the materials covered in Kor 1011. This course will focus on grammatical patterns, such as sentence structures, some simple grammatical points, and some survival level use of the Korean language. Additionally, speaking, reading, writing, and listening comprehension will all be emphasized, with special attention to oral speech.
Objectives
Upon completing this unit, students should:
Be able to participate in simple Korean conversations in a variety of settings.
Be able to compare and describe.
Be able to make requests, and express agreement and refusal.
Be able to read and write in defined contexts.
Be able to use Korean-English and English-Korean dictionary
Be able to type in Korean
Be able to recite at least one Korean poem
Have an increased understanding of Korean society and culture.
