Your mid-term grade will be reported to you on the third day of Weeks 7.  Please note that no incomplete grades will be given except under extraordinary circumstances (e.g., hospitalization in the last week of instruction) due to the nature of the course.

Academic Integrity (http://advisingtools.class.umn.edu/cgep/studentconduct.html)

In the case of academic misconduct, such as copying homework or cheating on quizzes or exams, the offending student(s) will be penalized in accordance with the policy of the College of Liberal Arts.  Those who let others copy their work will also be penalized.  Please note that academic dishonesty in any portion of the academic work for a course shall be grounds for awarding a grade of F or N for the entire course.

Preparation for Class

For undergraduate courses, one credit is defined as equivalent to an average of three hours of learning effort per week (over a full semester) necessary for an average student to achieve an average grade in the course.  Therefore, a student taking this four-credit course that meets for four hours a week should expect to spend an additional eight hours a week or 2.5 ~ 3 hours per class day on coursework outside the classroom.

A class schedule for the following week will be on the web at:
http://www.all.umn.edu/japanese_language/4041/4041.html,
by Friday.  It is your responsibility to read the schedule carefully to prepare with the right material and submit the right homework.  Please note that any changes will be announced in class.

Assignments

Each assignment must be turned in on time to receive full credit.  Assignments (except 'Yoshuu Sheet') submitted one class-day late will have 10% deducted from the overall score, and beyond the one class-day grace period no credit will be given.  Yoshuu Sheets must be turned in at the beginning of class, and there will be no credit for those turned in late.  You may be exempted from this penalty only when you are absent from the class.  If you have any concerns, talk to the instructor in a timely manner.

Vocabulary Quizzes

Vocabulary quizzes will be given at the beginning of class.  You do not need to be able to write Kanji, but you have to be able to recognize the reading and English translation of words.  The words which will be on a given quiz are the ones which are on the kanji sheets.  If you are absent and miss a scheduled quiz, you may make it up without any penalty on the day you first come back to school.  Beyond that, no credit will be given.

Exams: Chapter Tests and Final Exam

The written chapter tests will be given after each chapter ends.  The final exam is an oral interview, and given in the final week.  No make-up will be given except under extraordinary circumstances.  If you are unable to take a test on the scheduled day, talk to the instructor ahead of time to receive permission to take a make-up.
