Course Objectives

This course is the second of a two-semester sequence of Intermediate Japanese. The course will cover Lessons 18 through 22 of Genki (Refer to Course Materials below), both sections of dialogue/grammar and of reading/writing.

The course aims to develop the four communication skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) on the intermediate level, as well as culture-specific skills (do's and don'ts).  The items that will be covered in this term include, but are not limited to:

1. Describing the condition of an occurrence,

2. Speaking respectfully,

3. Explaining what you do not know,

4. Talking about bad experiences or events, and

5. Giving orders.

It is expected that, by the end of this semester, students will be able to use the above functions to participate in formal, professional conversation.  Students also will read/write short stories, expository writings, and formal letters.  78 kanji characters will be introduced in addition to the 224 characters learned in the previous lessons.

Prerequisite: JPN3021/4003

You are required to take the placement test if:

(1) your grade for JPN3021/4003 was not a C- or better, nor an S, or (2) you completed JPN3021/4003 at the University of Minnesota before 2007. Please remember that CDs are lent to you by the Dept. of ALL at no cost: it is your responsibility to handle materials carefully. The CDs and the cases must be returned in the same condition as when they were loaned to you. We received special permission from the publisher to copy them on the condition that 1) students make absolutely no copies, and 2) students RETURN materials PROMPTLY at the end of the course or IMMEDIATELY in the case of dropping the course. Please fill in the gCompact Disc User Agreementh available at gCPK & Review & Projecth in gCourse Materialsh and give the lower half below dotted line to your teacher on or after Monday, Jan. 26 (Day) or Tuesday, Jan 27 (EXT). CDs are loaned in your next discussion session. We will collect materials in class on Wednesday, May 6 (Day) or Tuesday, May 5 (EXT). (Username and Password to access gCPK & Review & Projecth will be announced in class.)

Before you return rental CDs/tapes, be sure to check:

(1) Are all of the CD/tape cases in perfect condition? If not, they must be replaced with new CD/tape cases.
(2) Is the label on each CD in an upright position?

(3) Are CDs/tapes bundled with a rubber band?

Suggested material:

Hudson, Endo Mutsuko (1994). English grammar for students of Japanese: The study guide for those learning Japanese. Ann Arbor: Oliva and Hill Press. ISBN: 0-934034-16-8 (If you have trouble grasping the concepts of grammar (the subject, object, etc.), this is a concise reference book.)

Weekly Schedule and Preparation for Class
A class schedule for the following week will be on the web every Friday afternoon. It is your responsibility to read the schedule carefully to prepare the right material and hand in the right homework. Memorizing vocabulary and practicing with CDs are crucial parts of your preparation for this course. You are expected to practice actively with them for at least two hours per day.

Class Attendance
Active class participation is mandatory. Attendance counts for 2 points. Being tardy or leaving more than 5 minutes early causes your attendance score to drop by 1 point. If you arrive late, report to the instructor after class to replace "absent" with "late" (1 point). Attending class for less than 25 minutes will count for 0 points. Whatever the reason for your absence or tardiness, no grading adjustment will be considered. If you are not physically present in class, it is marked as an absence. You must attend a section for which you have registered. If you would like to attend a different section for a day, you must get the instructorfs consent in advance. In this case, your maximum attendance score is 1 point. You may be exempted from this penalty only with an official document.

Homework

Each assignment must be turned in on time to receive full credit. Homework submitted late will have 10% deducted from the overall score on the first class day late, and 20% on the second class day. Any assignments submitted beyond two class days will be accepted, but no grade will be given. If you are unable to submit your assignment due to absence, you may submit your assignment on the day you first return to class to receive full credit, on the second attendance day with a 10% deduction, or the third attendance day with a 20% deduction. Any assignments submitted beyond three attendance days including the day you first return to class will be accepted, but no grade will be given. No exceptions will be considered for any reason. If you submit late assignments that were due on a day you were absent, you MUST write the following information next to your name on each assignment in order to avoid penalty: due date, the date(s) you missed class. (See the example below.)

Due date: 1/27 (Tues.)

Absent: 1/27 (Tues.), 1/28 (Wed.)

*  NOTE: Full credits will be given all QUIA assignments that are submitted on the due date. Any QUIA assignments submitted on the next calendar day will have 10% deducted from the overall score, and 20% on the second calendar day. No grade will be given to QUIA assignments submitted beyond two calendar days without an official document.

No visual aids are provided for a Dialogue Check make-up. Those who are allowed to make up missed dialogue checks and quizzes must make them up on the day they first return to class, or on the second attendance day with a 10% deduction. No make-up will be allowed for any reason beyond three attendance days, including the day you first return to class. Your scores for dialogue checks for the previous chapter will be posted on the Japanese program bulletin board next to 412 Folwell Hall after each chapter. No make-ups will be allowed after May14, 2009 (Thursday).

Exams (5 Lesson Tests and 2 Oral Interviews)

If you are unable to take an exam on the scheduled day, talk to a full-time instructor (Emmett or Todokoro) as soon as possible to receive permission to take a make-up. Make-ups will be penalized: 5% will be deducted from the score for each school day (Monday - Friday) after the scheduled exam day. You may be exempted from this penalty only with an official document (e.g., doctorfs note) explaining the reason for your inability to take the exam on the scheduled day. You must complete the last lesson test and the second oral interview by May 14, 2009 (Thursday) at the latest.
