Course Objectives

This course is the first of a two-semester sequence of Intermediate Japanese. The course will cover Lessons 13 through 17 of Genki (Refer to Course Materials below), both sections of dialogue/grammar and of reading/writing. The course aims to develop the four communication skills (i.e., speaking, listening, reading, and writing) at an intermediate level as well as culture-specific skills (do's and don'ts). The items that will be covered in this semester include but are not limited to:

1. Telling what you can or cannot do,

2. Consulting,

3. Explaining things in detail, and

4. Making a request in a polite manner.

It is expected that, by the end of this semester, students will be able to use the above functions for a job-interview, a request for the extension of a deadline, and so on. Students also will be able to read and write an expository essay. Seventy-nine kanji characters will be introduced, in addition to 145 characters learned in the previous lessons.

Prerequisite: JPN1012/4002

You are required to take a placement test if:

(1) your grade for JPN1012/4002 was neither a C- or better, nor an S, or if (2) you did not take JPN1012/4002 at the University of Minnesota in the previous year (i.e., You took JPN1012/4002 before 2008). The placement test will be given on Thursday, Sept. 10 (room TBA, 4:30-6:00). Please go to "Placement Test Info" on the Japanese Language Home Page and register for the test.

Weekly Schedule and Preparation for Class

A class schedule for the following week will be on the Moodle site every Friday. It is your responsibility to read the schedule carefully to prepare the right material and hand in the right homework. Memorizing vocabulary and practicing with CDs are crucial parts of your preparation for this course. You are expected to practice actively with your CDs for at least two hours per day.

Class Attendance

Active class participation is mandatory. Attendance counts for 2 points. Being tardy or leaving more than 5 minutes early causes your attendance score to drop by 1 point. If you arrive late, report to the instructor after class to replace "absent" with "late" (1 pt.) Attending class for less than 25 minutes will count for 0 points. If you are not physically present in class, it is marked as an absence. You must attend a section for which you have registered. If you would like to attend a different section for a day, you must get the instructor’s consent in advance. In this case, your maximum attendance score is 1 point. You may be exempted from these penalties with an official document. Grading adjustment will be made at the end of the semester if necessary.

See “Policy Statement” for more information: http://policy.umn.edu/Policies/Education/Education/MAKEUPWORK.html

Homework

Each assignment must be turned in on time to receive full credit. Homework submitted late will have 10% deducted from the overall score on the first class day late, and 20% on the second class day. Any assignments submitted beyond two class days will be accepted, but no grade will be given. If you are unable to submit your assignment due to absence, you may submit your assignment on the day you first return to class to receive full credit, on the second attendance day with a 10% deduction, or the third attendance day with a 20% deduction. Any assignments submitted beyond three attendance days including the day you first return to class will be accepted, but no grade will be given without the instructor’s consent. No exceptions will be considered for any reason. If you submit late assignments that were due on a day you were absent, you MUST WRITE the following information next to your name on each assignment in order to avoid penalty: due date, the date(s) you missed class. (See the example below.)

Make-up policy for Dialogue Checks & Quizzes

Make-up will be allowed with an official document (e.g., doctor’s note) or in case of family emergencies and may only be done during office hours or by appointment. No visual aids are provided for a Dialogue Check make-up. Those who are allowed to make up missed dialogue checks and quizzes must make them up on the day they first return to class, or on the second attendance day with a 10% deduction. No make-up will be allowed beyond three attendance days, including the day you first return to class without the instructor’s consent. Your scores for dialogue checks for the previous chapter will be available on the Moodle site. No make-ups will be allowed after Dec. 19, 2009 (Saturday).

Exams (5 Lesson Tests and 2 Oral Interviews)

If you are unable to take an exam on the scheduled day, talk to a full-time instructor (Emmett or Terui) as soon as possible to receive permission to take a make-up. Make-ups will be penalized: 5% will be deducted from the score for each school day (Monday – Friday) after the scheduled exam day. You may be exempted from this penalty with an official document (e.g., doctor’s note) explaining the reason for your inability to take the exam on the scheduled day or in case of family emergencies. You must complete the last lesson test and the second oral interview by Dec. 19, 2009 (Saturday) at the latest.

Academic Integrity

In the case of academic misconduct, such as copying someone's homework or cheating on a quiz, the offending student will be penalized in accordance with the policy of the College of Liberal Arts (http://www.cla.umn.edu/cgep/5.html). Those who let others copy their work also will be penalized. All academic misconducts will be reported to the Office for Student Academic Integrity and recorded on your transcript.
