This course is the first of a two-semester sequence of Beginning Japanese; it is for students who have no previous knowledge of Japanese. It aims to begin development of communication skills in Japanese. Therefore, we will work on the four basic skills of language (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) as well as culture-specific skills (do's and don'ts).
The following topics are covered in this semester:
|
1. Meeting people for the first time 2. Shopping and eating out 3. Describing activities and extending/declining invitations 4. Describing locations and things in the past 5. Making offers and talking about travel 6. Making a request, asking for/giving permission, and talking about rules |
The course will cover lessons
1 through 6 of Genki (Refer to Course Materials below), including both dialogue/grammar
and reading/writing. It is expected that, by the end of this
semester, students will have basic conversation skills in situations like those
noted above, as well as rudimentary literacy in Japanese. Two types of Japanese characters (hiragana and katakana), as well as 58 Chinese characters (kanji) will be learned.

Important Reminder for CD Rental The CDs/Tapes will be lent
out next Monday. Please remember
that CDs/Tapes are lent to you by the Dept. of ALL at no cost: it is your
responsibility to handle materials carefully. The CDs / tapes and their cases must be
returned in the same condition as when they were loaned to you. We received
special permission from the publisher to copy them on the condition that 1)
students make absolutely no copies, and 2) students return materials promptly at the end of the course or immediately in the case of dropping the course. We will collect CDs or tapes on December
9, 2008 (T). Students must check before
they return CDs/tapes: (1) Are all of the CD/tape cases in perfect condition? If not, they
must be replaced with new CD/tape cases. (3) Are CDs/tapes bundled with a rubber band? |
Suggested
material:
Weekly
Schedule and Preparation for Class
A class schedule for the following week will be on the
web (go to http://www.all.umn.edu/japanese_language/home.html and click gWeekly Scheduleh) every Thursday afternoon.
It is your responsibility to read
the schedule carefully to prepare with the right material and hand in the right
homework. Memorizing vocabulary and
practicing with CDs/tapes are crucial parts of your preparation for this
course. You are expected to
practice actively with your audio material for at least two hours per day.
Class Attendance
Active class
participation is mandatory. Attendance
counts for 2 points. Being tardy by
more than 5 minutes or leaving more than 5
minutes early causes your attendance score to drop by 1 point. If you arrive late, report to the instructor
after class to replace "absent" with "late" (1 point). Attending class for less than 25 minutes
will count for 0 points. Whatever
the reason for your absence or tardiness, no grading adjustment will be
considered. If you are not
physically present in class, it is marked as an absence. You must attend the section for which you
have registered. If you would like
to attend a different section for a day, you must get the instructorfs consent
in advance. In this case, your
maximum attendance score is 1 point.
Dialogue
Checks & Quizzes (tango tesuto, hiragana tesuto, katakana tesuto,
kanji tesuto)
You must turn in an official document (e.g.,
doctorfs note) to make up dialogue checks and/or quizzes you miss. Without an official document, No make-up
will be allowed. Also, you need to take the
make-up dialogue checks or quizzes on the day you first return to class. Make sure to come to our office to take it during office hours or by an
appointment. Please note that your
two lowest scores from quizzes and your lowest score from dialogue checks will
be dropped from your score at the end of the semester in order to compensate
for absences with/without accepted reasons. The score for Dialogue Checks is
based on two criteria: accuracy and fluency. You must memorize the sentences as they
appear in the textbook verbatim. You should listen to Dialogues on the web (go
to http://www.all.umn.edu/japanese_language/class_materials.html and click gListening
materialsh in order to improve your fluency. A user ID and password required to view
the page. Your scores for dialogue
checks for the previous chapter will be posted on the Japanese program bulletin
board next to 412 Folwell Hall after each chapter.
Homework
Each assignment must be turned in on time to receive full credit. Homework submitted late will have 10% deducted from the overall score on the first class day late, and 20% on the second class day. Any assignments submitted beyond two class days will be accepted, but NO grade will be given. If you are unable to submit your assignment due to absence, you may submit your assignment on the day you first return to class to receive full credit, on the second attendance day with a 10% deduction, or the third attendance day with a 20% deduction. Any assignments submitted beyond three attendance days including the day you first return to class will be accepted, but no grade will be given. No exceptions will be considered for any reason. If you submit late assignments that were due on a day you were absent, you must write the following information next to your name on each assignment in order to avoid penalty: due date, the date(s) you missed class. (See the example below.) Please note that the policy above doesnft apply to the assignments that need to be submitted online: you should turn these in on time to receive credit, otherwise you will get none.

Exams (5 Lesson Tests and 2 Oral
Interviews)
Look at the Exam Schedule on the web (Go to http://www.all.umn.edu/japanese_language/1011/1011.html,
and click gSemester Scheduleh) If
you are unable to take an exam on the scheduled day, talk to a full-time
instructor (Akiko Matsumoto, Fumiko Matsumoto, Tazawa or Terui) as soon as
possible to receive permission to take a make-up. Make-ups will be penalized: 5% will be
deducted from the score for each class day after the scheduled exam day. You may be exempted from this penalty
only with an official document (e.g., doctorfs note) explaining the reason for
your inability to take the exam on the scheduled day. You must complete the last lesson test
and the second oral interview by December 17 (W) at the latest.
