Chinese Language & Culture in Nanjing

Description
Develop Mandarin Chinese skills within selected subject areas of
contemporary Chinese society and culture in a large, yet traditional and
accessible Chinese city. The curriculum links language classes, a Chinese
studies course taught in English, and field trips in and around Nanjing. One
of the top five institutions in China, Nanjing University is primarily a liberal
arts and social sciences institution.

Curriculum
Enroll in intermediate or advanced Mandarin Chinese plus contemporary
Chinese studies, and complete an oral history project based on a chosen
topic. Instruction in Mandarin and English by Chinese faculty. Typical
credits: 30 per year; 15 per semester.

Estimated Cost
2001—02: Reduced costs for University of Minnesota students, academic
year $12,400; semester $6,350. Cost includes tuition, housing, meals, field
trips. Airfare and personal expenses additional.

Eligibility & Application
Open to freshmen and above, and graduate students; 2.75 GPA, 1 year
college-level Mandarin Chinese, and at least one Chinese area studies
course required. Applications reviewed until mid-March deadline for
fall/academic year; mid-October for spring.
