CHN 3031 Advanced Modern Chinese

Prerequisite: 3022 or equiv or instructor consent, 4 credits.

This course will be open only to those students who have completed the equivalent of the first 2 years of the Chinese Language Curriculum at the U of M. The focus will be on improving reading skills, building vocabulary, mastering new sentence structures and expressing one's ideas and opinions (especially about the readings) in both spoken and written Chinese. Both prepared and unprepared (spontaneous) responses to the written materials will be focused on in classroom
sessions (i.e. memorization of short passages, sight reading and Q&A sessions). As in previous years, readings will include: texts of Chinese history, geography, and culture, and common topics in present day Taiwan. We will attempt to develop a sense of spontaneity and confidence in dealing
with the type of contingent situations confronted daily when one is in a foreign-language environment. To this end, significant stress will be placed on teaching students to use the Chinese they know as a tool for mastering the Chinese they don't know.
