Chinese 3022 Language Proficiency Exam (LPE) Schedule - Spring 2012
CLA Language Testing Program
Your CLA second language requirement and U of M transcript
To fulfill your CLA second language requirement, you must either (1) earn a C- or better in Chinese 3022 or
(2) pass the Language Proficiency Exam (LPE).
During your enrollment in 3022, CLA encourages you to pass all four parts of the LPE and earn a text line
on your transcript endorsing your proficiency in Chinese.
Reasons to successfully complete the Language Proficiency Exam (LPE) during 3022
●Text line on your transcript endorsing your intermediate-level Chinese proficiency, which can
support applications for employment, graduate schools, foreign study programs, etc.
●Strongly recommended for students continuing in third-year Chinese courses.
●If you pass the LPE during 3022, you will fulfill your CLA second language requirement regardless of
the grade you earn in 3022.
What is the content and format of the Language Proficiency Exam (LPE)?
●The LPE consists of evaluations in reading, listening, writing, and speaking. For more information
go to http://langtest.umn.edu and click on “LPE.”
●To pass the LPE, you must pass writing, pass speaking, and earn a passing composite score on
reading plus listening.
What if I don’t pass the LPE or decide not to take the LPE?
●You will not have a text line on your transcript regarding your Chinese proficiency.
●There is no impact on your course grade.
●Your CLA second language requirement is still to earn a C- or better in Chinese 3022.
May I retake the LPE after 3022?
●Students who earn a C- or better in 3022 and did not take parts of the LPE may take those parts
after 3022. See http://langtest.umn.edu for future LPE dates.
●Students who earn a C- or better in 3022 may retake any portions of the LPE they did not pass
during 3022. See http://langtest.umn.edu for future LPE dates.
●Students who earn less than a C- in 3022 may not take or retake the LPE after 3022. These
students need to retake 3022 and earn a C- or better in order to fulfill their CLA second language
requirement.
