2. 闹翻 闹 (like the “market” 市 moved to your “door” 门 -> “noisy; to make a
noise; to make a scene”) + 翻 (the “feather; wing” radical 羽, which is
shaped like a pair of wings” -> “(of birds) turn over wings” -> “to turn
over” -> “turn things upside down”) -> “to have a falling out; break off”
4. 详细 详 (the “words” radical 言 -> “to talk about in detail”) + 细 (the altered
“thread” radical 系 on the left -> “thin as a string of thread” -> “finely;
meticulously”) -> “detailed; in detail” ■ 详细地讨论
10. 开朗 开 (“open” -> “open-minded”) + 朗 (the “moon” radical 月 -> “bright as
the moon”) -> “(of temperament) outgoing” ■ 他性格十分开朗。
11. 脾气 脾 (“spleen”) + 气 (“air; gas”) -> The Chinese believe that human
dispositions are determined by the “gas” emission from the spleen. ->
“temperament; temper; disposition” ■ 我女朋友的脾气很好。
12. 急躁 急 (the “heart” radical 心 -> “restless; keen, eager”) + 躁 (the “foot” radical
足 -> “stomp one’s feet [because of being restless and worried]”) -> “(of
temper) impetuous; impatient” ■ 我爸爸的脾气有点儿急躁。
21. 交往 交 (pictograph: cross-legged -> “cross; cross over”) + 往 (“head for”) ->
“to interact; to socialize; to have dealings (with)” ■ 跟别人交往
24. 背景 背 (the “flesh” radical月 and 北the sound component -> “back of the
body”) + 景 (“scene; scenery, landscape” as in 风景) -> “background”
33. 打破 打 (the altered “hand” radical 手 -> “to hit; to punch”) + 破 (the “stone,
rock” radical 石 -> “to break, crack, or burst”) -> “to break into pieces”
