As the first part of a two-semester sequence in second-year modern Chinese, Intermediate Modern Chinese will focus on four main language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students in this course are required to pay more attention to reading and writing, and will continue to consolidate their skills in listening and speaking. The course consists of two lectures and three recitations per week. The pace of the course will be approximately one lesson every six or seven days. By the end of the semester, those finishing the course are expected to be able to:
Write compositions in Chinese of about 250 characters on subject matters covered in the
first ten lessons of Integrated Chinese, Level 2.
Converse in Mandarin in some detail on subject matters covered in the first ten lessons
of Integrated Chinese, Level 2.
Read materials in modern Chinese of about 500 characters (either traditional or
simplified)
on subject matters covered in the first ten lessons of Integrated Chinese,
Level 2.
Use grammatical patterns productively and idiomatically introduced in the first ten
lessons of Integrated Chinese, Level 2.
