UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA Language Proficiency Information Sheet—Chinese 1016, Spring 2008
To fulfill your second
language requirement for the College of Liberal Arts (CLA), you must earn a C-
or better in Chinese 1016.
During your enrollment in 1016,
CLA encourages you to complete the Language Proficiency Exam (LPE) and earn a
text line on your transcript endorsing your proficiency in Chinese.
Reasons to successfully complete the Language
Proficiency Exam (LPE) during 1016:
- text line on your transcript endorsing your Chinese
proficiency, which can support applications for employment, graduate schools,
foreign study programs, etc.
- strongly recommended for students continuing in
third-year courses
- if you pass the LPE during 1016, you will fulfill
your second language requirement regardless of the grade you earn in 1016
What is the content and format of the Language
Proficiency Exam (LPE)?
- The LPE consists of evaluations in reading,
listening, writing, and speaking; for more information go to
<http://langtest.umn.edu> and click on “About the LPE.” To pass the LPE, you must pass speaking,
and earn a passing composite score on reading plus listening plus writing.
- You may register through the CLA Language Testing
Program website <http://langtest.umn.edu> for all four parts of the
LPE.

What if I don’t pass the LPE or decide not to take the
LPE?
- You will not have a text line on your transcript
regarding your Chinese proficiency.
- The CLA Language Testing Program will not be able
to complete language evaluation forms for you.
- There is no impact on your course grade, and your
second language requirement is still to earn a C- or better in Chinese 1016.
May I retake the LPE after 1016?
- Students who earn a C- or better in 1016 and did
not take parts of the LPE may take those parts after 1016; see <http://langtest.umn.edu>
for future LPE dates.
- Students who earn a C- or better in 1016 may
retake any portions of the LPE they did not pass during 1016; see <http://langtest.umn.edu>
for future LPE dates.
- Students who earn less than a C- in 1016 may not
take or retake the LPE after 1016; these students need to retake 1016 and
earn a C- or better in order to fulfill their second language requirement.
