Chinese 1012, Summer 2005


Prerequisite: Chinese 1011 at University of Minnesota or Equivalent

Instructors: Teaching Specialists and a Teaching Assistant

Course Description: This is the second half of the intensive first-level Chinese language (Mandarin) course series offered in the summer for non-heritage speakers of Chinese. The session lasts for five weeks (July 18 - August 19), and the class meets four class-hours a day, five days a week. It is equivalent to the second regular semester of Beginning Modern Chinese taught at University of Minnesota. Students with equivalent preparation may also register with the written permission of the instructor. In this course, students are further trained in modern standard pronunciation, and introduced to additional Chinese characters, vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structures. By the end of the semester, students who successfully complete the course work should be able to recognize 500 additional Chinese characters; write 120 of them from memory; read dialogues and simple texts on topics covered in both Part One and Part Two of Level One of the Textbook; conduct a meaningful conversation on topics covered in the textbook, and write grammatically correct sentences in Chinese.

Textbook:    Integrated Chinese, Level One, Part Two, Tao-chung Yao, et al., Cheng and Tsui                        Company, 1997.
Class time:  30% Lecture, 70% Discussion.
Grading:      20% Attendance, 25% Homework, 5% Vocabulary Quizzes, 10% Lesson Quizzes,
                      15% Tests, 10% Midterm, 15% Final.
Exam Format: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.
