Instructors: Teaching Specialist and Teaching Assistants Course Description: This is the second half of the intensive first-level Chinese language (Mandarin) course series offered in the summer for non-heritage speakers of Chinese. The session lasts for five weeks (July 21-August 22), and the class meets four class-hours a day, five days a week. It is equivalent to the second regular semester of Beginning Modern Chinese taught at University of Minnesota. This course is designed for those who have completed Chinese 1011. Students with equivalent preparation may also register with the written permission of the instructor. In this course, students are further trained in modern standard pronunciation, and introduced to additional Chinese characters, vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structures. By the end of the semester, students who successfully complete the course work should be able to recognize 500 additional Chinese characters; write about 400 of them; read dialogues and simple texts on topics covered in both Part One and Part Two of Level One; conduct a meaningful conversation on topics covered in the textbook, and write grammatically correct sentences in Chinese.
